How to Delete an Email Account in cPanel
Deleting an email account removes the mailbox and all messages stored on the server. Back up anything you need first — deletion cannot be undone.
Step-by-step
- Back up the mailbox first. Connect the account in a desktop client via POP (which downloads messages), or forward/export important mail from webmail.
- Log in to cPanel and open Email → Email Accounts.
- Find the account in the list — use the search box if you have many.
- Click Manage next to the account.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Delete Email Account. cPanel shows how much data will be removed.
- Confirm. The address stops receiving immediately; senders will get a bounce ("recipient does not exist") unless a catch-all is set.
- Optional: keep the address alive. If you only want to stop using the mailbox but still receive mail, create a forwarder from this address to another mailbox instead of deleting.
💡 Good to know
- Deleting an account also frees its disk space instantly — useful when cleaning up.
- Mail clients configured for the deleted account will show login errors — remove the account from those devices.
- Consider an autoresponder for a transition period before deleting a customer-facing address.
