How to Manage Disk Usage in cPanel

Running near your storage limit slows backups and can stop email. The Disk Usage tool shows exactly where the space went, and the usual culprits are quick to clear.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Files → Disk Usage. The bar chart ranks every top-level folder by size; click a folder name to drill into it.
  2. Check mail first. The mail folder is the most common space consumer — large Sent/Trash folders and undownloaded inboxes. Fix with the POP workflow and by emptying Sent/Trash in webmail.
  3. Find forgotten backups. Old backup-….tar.gz files and site zips in the home directory are pure dead weight — download them to your computer and delete from the server.
  4. Clear old logs and caches. Application caches (e.g. CMS cache folders) and old error_log files can be deleted safely.
  5. Empty cPanel's trash: File Manager keeps deleted files in .trash until emptied — click Empty Trash in File Manager.
  6. Remove unused software — abandoned test installations, old site copies, unused themes/plugins.
  7. Re-check Disk Usage and compare with the sidebar quota figure (it refreshes within minutes).
