How to Change an Email Password in cPanel

Email passwords can be changed by the cPanel owner for any mailbox, or by the mailbox user themselves through webmail. Both routes take a minute.

Step-by-step

  1. As the cPanel owner: open Email → Email Accounts, click Manage next to the account.
  2. Enter a new password under Security — or click Generate for a strong random one. The strength meter must pass.
  3. Click Update Email Settings. The change is immediate.
  4. As the mailbox user: log in to webmail at yourdomain.com/webmail, click your address (top-right) → Password & Security, and set the new password there.
  5. Update every connected device. Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, iPhone and Android will prompt for the new password — enter it on each, otherwise they will retry the old one and may temporarily lock the account.

💡 Good to know

  • Repeated wrong-password attempts from a stale device can trigger temporary IP blocks by the server firewall — update devices promptly.
  • If a mailbox may be compromised, change the password immediately and review its filters and forwarders for rules an attacker may have added.
  • Use a different password for every mailbox.
