How to Clone WordPress to a Staging Site
A staging site is a private copy where you can test updates, new plugins or redesigns without risking your live site. Softaculous clones a full copy in a few clicks.
Step-by-step
- Create a staging area. A subdomain like staging.yourdomain.com is ideal; create it first in cPanel.
- Open Softaculous → All Installations and find your live WordPress.
- Click the Staging (clone-style) icon for that install.
- Choose the destination — select the staging subdomain and leave the directory blank.
- Click Create Staging. Softaculous copies the files and database to the staging location.
- Test your changes on staging, then use the Push to Live option to copy the approved changes back — review carefully, as pushing overwrites live content.
💡 Good to know
- Password-protect the staging subdomain (Directory Privacy) so search engines and visitors cannot see it.
- Push to Live overwrites the live database — never edit live content while testing on staging.
- Delete old staging copies when finished to free disk space.
