How to Clone WordPress to a Staging Site

A staging site is a private copy where you can test updates, new plugins or redesigns without risking your live site. Softaculous clones a full copy in a few clicks.

Step-by-step

  1. Create a staging area. A subdomain like staging.yourdomain.com is ideal; create it first in cPanel.
  2. Open Softaculous → All Installations and find your live WordPress.
  3. Click the Staging (clone-style) icon for that install.
  4. Choose the destination — select the staging subdomain and leave the directory blank.
  5. Click Create Staging. Softaculous copies the files and database to the staging location.
  6. Test your changes on staging, then use the Push to Live option to copy the approved changes back — review carefully, as pushing overwrites live content.

💡 Good to know

  • Password-protect the staging subdomain (Directory Privacy) so search engines and visitors cannot see it.
  • Push to Live overwrites the live database — never edit live content while testing on staging.
  • Delete old staging copies when finished to free disk space.
