Understanding cPanel vs WHM
cPanel and WHM are related but different. Knowing which is which clears up a lot of confusion for new hosting users.
Step-by-step
- cPanel manages one hosting account — your websites, email, files, databases and domains. This is what most customers use daily.
- WHM (Web Host Manager) manages the server or multiple accounts — creating cPanel accounts, setting packages and server-level configuration.
- On a standard EconomicalHost shared plan, you use cPanel; the server-level WHM is managed by EconomicalHost.
- On a reseller plan, you get WHM to create and manage cPanel accounts for your own clients.
- On a managed VPS or dedicated server, you may have WHM for full control while EconomicalHost handles the underlying server.
- Use the right tool: day-to-day site and email tasks are all in cPanel; account creation and server settings are in WHM.
💡 Good to know
- If you only have one website, you will likely never need WHM.
- Reseller hosting is the usual reason a customer has WHM access.
