How to Manage Active FTP Sessions

FTP Connections shows who is connected to your account by FTP right now — useful for spotting stuck transfers or unexpected access.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Files → FTP Connections in cPanel.
  2. Review the active sessions — each shows the user, the connecting IP, login time and current status.
  3. Identify anything unexpected — an IP you do not recognise warrants investigation.
  4. Disconnect a session by clicking the Disconnect (kill) action next to it — useful for a frozen transfer.
  5. Change passwords if access looks suspicious and review your FTP accounts.
  6. Remove unused FTP accounts to reduce the ways into your hosting.

💡 Good to know

  • A stuck upload can lock a file — disconnecting the session usually frees it.
  • Unrecognised FTP access is a red flag — change passwords and investigate.
  • Prefer FTP over TLS (FTPS) so credentials are encrypted in transit.
